However, physical activity can actually help prevent nerve damage, control blood sugar levels, and relieve pressure on the feet and legs. Before you introduce any new exercises into your daily schedule, consult with your US Neuropathy Centers physician. If you get the go ahead, remember to be cautious and continually check your blood sugar levels. Here are some tips on how to exercise safely.
Choose low-impact exercises. Swimming, yoga, and cycling are all non-weight-bearing exercises that support muscle, bone, and joint strength. These workouts also eliminate pressure to your feet, knees, and hips.
Don’t overdo it. Not every exercise requires extreme body motions. Light weight lifting and moderate strength training exercises will help you build strength to your extremities without overextending yourself. Make modifications to your workouts to improve your success and to target areas that need more attention.
Make it fun. Just because you suffer from nerve pain and diabetes doesn’t mean you cant have fun with your workouts. Workouts don’t have to be done in the gym, either. Bowling, walking outside, tennis, and volleyball are all fun, outdoor activities that involve exercise. Ask a friend or family member to join and go through these routines together.
